The Eisner Awards were doled out on July 18, 2003 at the San Diego Convention Center, during Comic-Con International. Major winners included Mike Mignola and Brian Bendis. Fables and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were big winners as well.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are the "Oscars" of the comic book industry. They are awarded each year in a ceremony at Comic-Con International, the major gathering of the industry, the largest comics convention in the US For more information, go to www.Comic-Con.org.

The Winners
Brian Bendis won the Best Writer trophy for Daredevil, Alias, Ultimate Spider-Man (Marvel) and Powers (Image). Daredevil won for Best Continuing Series. Mike Mignola received the awards for Best Short Story ("The Magician and the Snake," which was written with Katie, his daughter, and published in Dark Horse Maverick: Happy Endings and Best Humor Publication for The Amazing Screw-on Head (Dark Horse).

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol. 2 , (ABC) was named Best Limited Series. Fables from DC's Vertigo Imprint won Best New Series and Best Serialized Story (for its first story "arc"). Kevin O'Neill was awarded Best Penciller/Inker. Todd Klein, who lettered Fables and many others, won the Best Lettering award. This was the 10th year in a row Klein won the prize.

The Best New Graphic Album was by Lynda Barry - One Hundred Demons! SPX 2002 received Best Anthology kudos. Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition went to Jason Shiga (Fleep). Mike Kunkel won Best Title for a Younger Audience with Herobear and the Kid.

From a publisher's perspective, DC Comics lead. Its imprints had eight (plus one shared) winners. Besides Fables and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, DC Eisner winners included Best Publication Design (Batman: Nine Lives), Best Cover Artist (Adam Hughes, Wonder Woman), Best Graphic Album-Reprint (Batman: Black and White, vol. 2) and share for Dave Stewart's Best Coloring award.

Fantagraphics won four Eisners: Best Archival Project (Krazy + Ignatz), Best Single Issue (Kim Deitch's Stuff of Dreams), Best Writer/Artist-Humor (Tony Millionaire, House at Maakies Corner) and Best Comics-Related Publication (B. Krigstein, vol. 1).

Other awards distributed during the evening included the Comic-Con's Clampett and Manning awards. The Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award went to Alex Ross. The Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award went to Jerome Opeña, artist on Dark Horse's new Lone series via Rocket Comics.
