On 1/16/03, the BISG's Metadata Codes and Values Subcommittee approved a new Graphic Novel BISAC subject heading code, the standard unit by which books are categorized bookstores. The new category and sub-categories will prove an invaluable aid in selling graphic novels to the bookstore market. Of course, the action further legitimizes the format, in bookstores and libraries.

A graphic novel is a sophisticated book-length story generally contained in one volume. The format was created in 1978 by Will Eisner. The veteran cartoonist coined the term while trying to pitch a collection of stories told in comic book format to a trade publisher.

The form grew so popular that by the end of the next decade, many publishers concentrated their efforts solely on graphic novels. Graphic novels can be nonfiction or fiction and fall into genres, such as fantasy, science fiction, short stories, biography and history, as well as, superhero and manga.
